Pickwick Lake Fishing Report:     07 March 2024

Lake levels are down but fish are biting! The water temp is rising so they are finally making their way to their shallow springtime areas. They are staging on shallow gravel points and creek mouths leading to spawning coves. To fish the points, throw a shallow running red crankbait and jig. Fish the creek mouths with a swimbait and jig. Between Waterloo and yellow creek seems to be the best for shallow points. Goodluck!

High waters and heavy current flows are making the fish bite. Up river seems to be productive in current breaks and gravel bars. These fish can be caught on a swim bait and Alabama rig. When setting up on these places it is important to fish the seam line created by the current as they will use this area to feed. Down the river fish are still being caught on an Alabama rig and rattle trap out of the grass and gravel points. With the amount of current flowing through Pickwick right now it is important to focus on the areas where there are current breaks and key in on the bite. Good luck!

Fishing is starting to heat up on Pickwick. Fish can be found in current breaks at the dam using an Alabama rig, jig, swimbait. Grass around the Trace bridge on a Chatterbait, rattle trap and punching. Around state line island they are still using creek channels and casing bait. These fish will be caught dragging a Carolina rig and jig. There is also a note throwing a shallow crankbait around structure.

The lake is fishing good right now, but fish are in very small areas. They are finally starting to move towards their fall time shallow pockets and grass. Fish have just about abandoned their summer offshore holes and headed to the bank. Fish can be found in the back of pockets with a whopper plopper and buzz bait. Also, there is a lot of fish in the grass up the river. These will be caught on a buzz bait and a flipping bait. For flipping I prefer a 3/4oz weight with a craw imitating bait. Once you catch one it seems that there will be more in the same area. Goodluck and enjoy some topwater blowups!

The dog days of summer have set in. The bite is slowing down and fish began to move from summer locations to fall. There is still fish being caught deep as well as in the grass. The fish in the grass seem to be picking up and producing more bites. These fish will be caught with a topwater in the morning and slowing down dragging during the heat of the day. Bites have been tough but once you find an area they will come in a hurry.

Hotter days are making the bite become tough. The majority of fish are being caught upriver in the grass. The fish are sitting on the edge of grass with a big worm or in the mat with a frog. While fishing the grass be sure to look for schooling fish. If they began to school throw a spook through them. There is still plenty of fish down lake out deep, but they have become difficult to catch.

Hot temperatures are moving bass all over the lake right now. The large summertime schools are beginning to disperse and head towards shallow grass and deeper areas in search of oxygen. There are still fish to be caught out of the large school but there is just not as many schools. To have a successful day on the water this week you will need to target grass bars up the river and main river ledges. Bass will be caught on a big swimbait and jig. I prefer a lighter bait for grass and a 3/4 or larger weight for offshore fishing. Good luck!

Pickwick With water temps high bass are finally offshore. Look for ledges or main river drops in 20-30ft of water. These bass will be in large schools of 50-200 fish. You will find these fish using down and side imaging along main river drops. Once the bass have been located you can catch them on a Carolina rig and jig. I like to use a baby brush hog and a 3/4oz weight on my Carolina rig. I like to throw a 3/4oz green pumpkin jig with a green pumpkin trailer. If you are not interested in catching numbers on ledges fish can be found above the trace bridge in the grass. These will be caught on a buzz bait and Chatterbait. Good luck!

The last few days on Percy Priest Lake the water has risen almost 2′! With more rain in the forecast the lake should continue to rise slowly. The Army Corp of Engineers are lowering the lake, but probably not at the pace it’s entering. In addition to the water rising, the warm temperatures have helped put both bass and crappie into aggressive modes. The bass have been shallow in 1 to 5′ of water throughout the lake and being caught on swimbaits, spinnerbaits, jerk baits and topwater lures.

Shallow boulder rocks and gravel have been productive, but now that the water has come up near the bank around flooded vegetation and trees has been turned on! The water temperature is at 71°. With the warmer temperatures the crappie spawn is wrapping up and large concentrations of crappie are moving out into 10-20′ of water. Brush piles on the upper and middle areas of the lake are holding many crappie. Tight lining minnows 2 to 4′ off the bottom has been successful in addition to casting 1/8oz jigs from 25′ away. Black and chartreuse has been the most productive Crappie Magnet color for us the last 3 days. As the warm weather continues, we’ll see more crappie moving out deeper.

Shad spawn!!! The bass are shallow right now as they are still moving off of bed. They are being caught out of shallow grass where Shad are spawning. These fish can be caught on a white Chatterbait or any other bait fish imitating bait. Aside from Shad spawn fish can still be caught around shallow structure on a wacky rig and Texas rig. The fish are moving everyday so there’s no better time to be on the water then now. Look for Shad popping to top of the water or just go shallow and fish structure. Good luck!!

Pickwick Lake has been putting out some solid bags. Fish are moving up and biting all over the lake. Largemouth can be caught in the pockets down lane flipping a jig. Up the river smallmouth are beginning to spawn. They can be caught using a shaky head worm in the horseshoe and gravel bars around McFarland. It is a good time of the year to get out on Pickwick and fish around as they are full and moving up to spawn.

NEW

Pickwick lake has been rough this fall to say the least.  The Catch a Dream tournament came out of the State Park last week only took 18lbs to win. Weights quickly fell off towards the 13-9lb range as an average. I can only hope that as we head into winter the lake turns around a starts producing large bags again. Right now, the best bet to get bit is fishing bluff near yellow creek and fishing up the river. Along bluffs it will be best to throw a shakey head and jigs. Way up the river you will want to get into some serious current and target smallmouth. They will be found in the middle of the current also on a shakey head and jig. Goodluck!!

If I was going to Pickwick tomorrow, I would go either to the dam or down around the trace bridge. The fish are really scattered right now as they move into their fall locations. It seems like I can get bit fishing grass with a big worm and chatter bait around the trace. The smallmouth are probably the most consistent right now they will be in the current breaks up past McFarland bridge or on rock piles in the channel. They will be caught on a topwater and jig.

Warm weather is still causing fish to move shallow and began to spawn. This is making the bite better as fish can be easily caught along banks and brush. They will be found around shallow docks, gravel banks, and brush. They will be caught using a jig or creature bait. With this being said not all fish are shallow there are still plenty to be caught on secondary points they just seem to be smaller. These fish will be caught using a shallow crankbait or lipless. Up the river the smallmouth fishing is in full swing as they are also moving to spawn. They are setting up on shallow gravel banks and rock piles. These fish will be caught using a ned rig and swimbait. Right now, is a good time to pick a pretty day and enjoy our Tennessee waters.

The fish are confused but still biting. This week water levels dropped 4 feet causing  all the fish on the banks to head back towards deeper water. Fish can still be caught on shallow shell bars and banks using a rattletrap and chatter bait. The majority of fish have set up in ditches or brush close to their spawning areas. These can be targeted on a jig and worm. Up the lake smallmouth fishing has also gotten tougher this week as the flood gates have turned off. They are still being caught on rock piles as they are looking to spawn. These fish will be targeted with a swimbait and shakey head. Water temperatures are high 50’s to low 60’s so the fish are looking to move shallow and spawn.

Up the river the smallmouth are starting to fire up for the spring. They have been caught on rock piles and current seams. The smallmouth will be caught using a swimbait and crankbait. Warm weather this week is causing a feeding frenzy up and down the lake. Fish are making a major push up shallow to spawn. They are biting really good on transition flats and secondary points. They can be targeted using a shallow crankbait and jig. Focus on gravel spots as they love to sit on gravel as they transition. Up the river the smallmouth are biting like crazy. They are loaded in the current break and shallow shell bars. They can be targeted on a swimbait and jig. Aside from the current breaks the horseshoe is producing quality fish along the current seam of the island. It has been a good week to be fishing on pickwick when you get out just remember if you catch one there is more in the area. Focus on shallow and transition areas.

The lake is finally starting to stabilize letting fish transition into their springtime spawning areas. There are both numbers and size being caught. You can find largemouth moving onto flats and secondary points. They will be caught using a jig and a rattle trap. This week has required lots of moving around until I ran into them. Once I found them it seemed to be a school of them. Up the river the current is still flowing leading smallmouth to current breaks. They can be targeted with a shaky head and crank bait. It has been a good week for fishing if you are planning on getting out don’t get hung-up on one spot and fish until you run into a school.

They are still a long ways from spawning but with these warmer temperatures they are finally making a big push shallow. They are being caught on lipless crankbaits and square bills. However, there are still quality fish to be caught out off the deeper points and ditches. They can be targeted using a football jig or an A rig. It’s a good time of year to just go fishing as they are feeding up and making the push shallow. Smallmouth are still being caught good up the river in current breaks and transition areas. They can be targeted using medium diving crankbaits and an A rig. Recent cold fronts and winter weather have left fish cold and lethargic. The lake has been fishing extremely tough both up and down lake. The flood gates are still open which has keyed the smallmouth in on current breaks and deep rock piles. They can be caught on an Alabama rig and spinnerbait. If neither of those are working you may try to downsize to a Ned rig on light line to produce a bite. Down lake the large and small mouth have been on deeper points and steep bluffs. They can be targeted using light weigh jigs and a Alabama rig. Both have been slow but if you stick with it could make for a rewarding day on the water.

Rain is leaving the lake high and rolling with current. Fish are really keying in on current breaks in the river such as, creek mouths, trees, and bluff ends. There have been four flood gates open this week creating a very current rich environment. Bass can be caught using baits such as a chartreuse spinnerbait and a red crank bait. Down the lake things are a little different. Fish have made a push further up the points and deeper into the pockets as waters rise. Fish are being caught using a green pumpkin jig and finesse worm. The lake is setting up to fish as it should in April, but the water temperature is keeping fish more dormant. If headed to Pickwick this week just remember to keep an open mind and keep your retrieve slow.

Bass anglers are throwing anything that mimics a shad to include A-rigs, spinnerbaits with willow leaf blades, paddle tail swimbaits, blade baits and jerk baits to catch bass. Current is a key around points, gravel bars and current breaks. Some are catching them in grass beds that are holding shad. The tailwaters of the dams are also productive right now.

Crappie are being caught in Yellow, Indian and Bear creeks. Crappie jigs and crankbaits are working. Minnows are also a smart go to especially around brush.

Catfish are being caught with whole and cut shad and skipjack. Work the gravel bars, shallow ledges, and humps. Look for anywhere the cats can get out of the current and ambush their meals.

Bass are being caught in numbers chasing the shad in the pockets. Big bass are still harder to find with a few chasing the bait and a few in the grass. Small swimbaits, flukes and frogs are good in the areas weedless baits are needed. Otherwise use baits that are mimicking the shad.

Yellow and white bass are also schooling. The crappie continue to be best in Yellow and Bear Creeks. For catfish it’s time to try cut bait and whole skipjack and shad. Work the gravel bars, humps, and shallow ledges for the best results.

The deep-water bite is almost gone. The bass are in the creeks chasing schools of shad. Success can be found on worms, swimbaits, and jigs. Downsizing to ned rigs, shakeyheads and dropshots will catch fish when other baits wont. The shallow bite where the bass are chasing bait schools are best targeted with topwater baits. Yellow and Bear creek are producing crappie bites. Anglers are trolling minnows and jigs. Catfish continue to bite flavored cut chicken breast and whole shad or cut bait.

It continues to be hit and miss at Pickwick with some tournament anglers finding good fish while others are coming up empty. Deep fish are being caught on Texas and Carolina rigs with a backup being shakeyheads and dropshots. Frogs and flukes are working in the grass as well as weedless swimbaits. Like many other parts of the river if you find them schooling throw topwater into the action for best chance of a catch. The crappie bite remains slow and the catfish bite is best at night on cut and flavored chicken breast.

Much as the other parts of the river deep crankbaits and jigs are common baits for this bite and dropshots and shakeyheads for when the bite slows down. Much as the other parts of the river deep crankbaits and jigs are common baits for this bite and dropshots and shakeyheads for when the bite slows down. Most fish are being caught in 15 to 25 feet of water. Not all ledges are holding fish so you will have to work the electronics. The crappie bite has slowed for most while the catfish bite remains strong especially at night.

The offshore humps and ledges are very active with lots of fisherman on all of those. Fishermen are using deep crankbaits to finesse baits to trigger those fish. The off shore ledges are very active with bass anglers using big crankbaits and small finesse baits. The bass are mostly in 15 to 25 feet of water and working your electronics is key in finding schools. The crappie are being found in 20 to 30 feet of water in Bear and Yellow creek. The catfish bite has picked up and they’re biting all the standard baits of worms, liver and flavored chicken breast chunks.

Pickwick
Pickwick conditions remain the same as last week. The bass bite is doing well but scattered from the backs of creeks, to docks to ledges. There are reports of good topwater bites in the backwater area, but look for grass and bushes and fish there. Weightless soft plastics are working as well as shakeyheads and spinner baits. Crappie have slowed down but are still being caught drifting and trolling jigs and casting jigs and roadrunners for suspended fish. The fish are primarily in 10 to 15 feet of water and biting both minnows and jigs. Catfish are being caught on redworms and nightcrawlers with many coming off the rock walls currently.

Pickwick – Hensley Powell is fishing a tournament there this week and says you can catch 28 pounds in seven bites a day. He says the majority of bass are not on a bed because of the water fluctuation. A major shad spawn will happen in May and again a spinnerbait is very effective. Most of the fish he’s seen are in 6 to 8 feet of water.
